Environmental, Health & Safety

Pipelines often resemble long assembly lines for which Caterpillar machines are built with worksite productivity and safety in mind. Machines clear the right of way, dig a trench, bend and weld the pipe, and lower pipes into the trench. Whenever joints of pipe come into contact with machines, careful handling is necessary to avoid damage that could lead to corrosion and leakage. Boom pads on Cat® pipelayers provide an extra layer of protection. Hydraulic excavators with long undercarriages and pipelayers with extra-wide tracks provide improved flotation over sensitive terrain, which means less ground disturbance and soil compaction.

In addition to ergonomically correct ladders, grab rails and controls, Cat machines feature excellent sightlines to aid operator awareness of other people and equipment on the worksite. Of course, machine operators remain the single most important contributor to a safe jobsite, which is why Caterpillar has created a variety of industry specific safety materials including the "Walk Around Inspections" video.
