Emission regulations for non-road equipment will get stricter on schedules already set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the European Union.

Emission regulations for non-road equipment will get stricter on schedules already set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the European Union. The accompanying chart shows how the regulations will phase in between now and 2008.

The U.S. EPA Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 standards have been harmonized with European standards to help enable free trade. Tier 1 standards are already in effect and were phased in by 2000. Tier 2 standards are in effect for some engine ranges and will continue to phase in through 2006, with Tier 3 and Tier 4 phasing in through 2015.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 EPA standards and Stage II European standards may make electronic control on new engines essential to compliance.
