Tips on Cutting Fuel Consumption
Soaring fuel prices are putting a dent in your bottom line. Here are a few ways to get more out of each gallon.
- Minimize idling times. For modern, electronically controlled diesel engines, 10 minutes is usually sufficient to warm up and cool down equipment. Excessive idling can lead to unnecessary fuel use.
- Fill fuel tanks to 95 percent capacity to allow for expansion and to reduce spillage.
- Reduce excess weight on equipment. Avoid carryback, and maintain rated payload.
- Keep tires properly inflated. Inflation pressure is an important variable for traction efficiency, tire life, and ride comfort—especially for radial tires. Check with your tire manufacturer for the proper inflation. Improperly inflated tires burn more fuel and reduce tire life expectancy.
- Perform routine maintenance. Routinely replace fuel, oil, and air filters and use the proper grade of motor oil in all vehicles, tractors, and other equipment to keep them operating at peak efficiency. Consult your Owning and Operating Manual for the proper change intervals.
