New Cat® 320D2 GC Hydraulic Excavator Features Fuel Efficiency, Powerful Hydraulics, Durable Structures for Optimum Customer Value

The new Cat® 320D2 GC hydraulic excavator, with an operating weight of 20 100 kg (44,300 lb.), is engineered for low owning and operating costs, application versatility, simple routine maintenance, and long-term durability. The new model features a fuel-efficient Cat C4.4 ACERTTM engine and a powerful hydraulic system that uses an energy-saving design for optimum efficiency. The 320D2 GC’s optimized main structures are built to perform flawlessly year after year in general construction applications, and the operator’s station, equipped with low-effort, pilot-operated joystick controllers, is spacious, quiet, and comfortable.

Performance and structures

The C4.4 ACERT engine—with a gross power rating of 93 kW (125 hp)—uses a specially designed fuel system that operates robustly and reliably in areas where fuel might be of lesser quality. To ensure optimum cleanliness of fuel delivered to the engine, the filtration system uses a series of three filters, the primary filter having an integrated water separator and the twin secondary filters designed with fine-micron capacity. The engine meets US EPA Tier 3/EU Stage IIIA equivalent emissions standards and features an Automatic Engine Control system that reduces engine speed during no-load operation to conserve fuel. Depending on the application, the 320D2 GC fuel savings is up to 17 percent more than its 320D2 counterpart.

The implement hydraulic system features dual hydraulic pumps delivering flows to 428 L/min (113 gpm) at pressures to 35 000 kPa (5,076 psi) for optimum digging and lifting performance. An independent pilot-pump ensures rapid, precise response for controlling the front linkage and swing and travel functions. Swing and travel speed was improved, compared to the 320D2. Hydraulic-system components are placed in close proximity to keep lines short, thus reducing friction loss and pressure drops for added efficiency.

In addition, regeneration valves in the boom-down and stick-in circuits rapidly transfer fluid between the cylinder ends, reducing loads on the main pumps and reducing cycle times. In addition, snubbers in the boom and stick cylinders cushion rod travel.

Structures

The 320D2 GC uses heavy-duty main-frames, including a modified X-frame carbody (lower frame) engineered for durability. The boom and sticks are robotically welded and feature a heavy-plate design. The undercarriage features sealed and lubricated track rollers, carrier rollers, and idlers that extend overall undercarriage life.

The new model uses a 5.7-meter (18.67-ft.) reach boom and a 2.9-meter (9.5 ft.) stick configuration designed for truck loading and trenching applications. A selection of Cat general-duty buckets allows matching machine performance to earthmoving requirements, and available work tools include Cat E Series and B Series hydraulic breakers.

Operating convenience and safety

The 320D2 GC features an ergonomically designed cab with low-effort, intuitive controls and a monitor that has the capability of displaying information in 42 languages.  A fully adjustable seat and adjustable control-lever consoles enhance operator comfort and convenience, and the cab is pressurized with filtered air to keep the operator’s environment clean and well ventilated.

Large glass areas provide optimum visibility, and all glass is affixed directly to the cab, eliminating frames, and the upper front glass opens and can be stored in the cab roof.  The cab is designed to minimize sound levels and reduce vibration via viscous-rubber cab-mounting system.

For the safety of the operator and others on the job site, 320D2 GC is equipped with a hydraulic-activation lever that locks out all hydraulic functions when in its raised position. For the protection of the operator and technicians serving the machine, walking surfaces on the machine use anti-skid plating and countersunk bolts to reduce the prospect of slips and falls. A full-length firewall separates the pump compartment from the engine compartment and a ground-level engine shutdown switch is provided to stop the engine in emergencies.

Serviceability and technology

For convenience and safety, most of the 320D GC’s routine service points can be reached from ground level. The highly efficient fuel filters are remote-mounted and readily accessible. To facilitate machine-health checks, pressure taps for fluid systems and S·O·SSM (scheduled oil sampling) ports are located for quick access. The air filter features a double-element design, and a display on the monitor advises when service is required. Batteries are maintenance-free, and a disconnect switch is standard. A remote greasing block enables easily lubricating boom and stick pivots.

The 320D2 GC is equipped with the Cat Product Link telematics system, a powerful system that collects data from multiple sensors integrated into the machine. This information is then wirelessly transmitted to the Cat VisionLink® system, the web-based interface that allows machine users to quickly access pertinent data, such as machine location, fuel consumption, idle time, utilization, and maintenance scheduling. In addition, a suite of Caterpillar developed technologies allows the machine owners to improve the efficiency of operations in the areas of equipment management, productivity, and safety.
