When construction began in Sochi in 2007, it was hard to believe the scope of the project. Numerous new sports facilities, roads, bridges, hotels, and buildings all had to be built in just a few short years.
About 300 Cat® dozers, excavators, motor graders, backhoe loaders and other machines were used to prepare sites and construct new infrastructure for the games, including the main game sites: Krasnaya Polyana in the mountains and the Olympic Park in the Low Imeretian valley.
There was also high demand for rental power to ensure the games could be seen in millions of homes across the globe. Cat® Entertainment Services (CES), through collaboration with Cat Rental Power, was awarded a contract to provide back-up power and technical services to the International Broadcast Centers. The centers, located in the coastal and mountain regions, welcome approximately 12,000 media representatives, including more than 10,000 television broadcasters representing about 100 countries from all around the world.
Built by the Electric Power Division (EPD), the generators powering the Winter Games can provide as much as 38 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to power 38,000 homes. This is possible through 28 1700 kVA power modules, external fuel cells, 37 miles of power distribution cable, 523 power distribution panels and five project managers to oversee installation, maintenance, operation and removal.
“Electric Power is proud to partner with CES to power the 2014 Winter Games,” says Rick Rathe, EPD Rental general manager. “The games are one of the largest events in the world for sports television and radio. And over the years, events like these have turned to Cat Rental Power because of our reputation as a reliable provider of power, service and world-class products.”
The 2014 Winter Games in Sochi are running now through February 23.
