The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. is the trade association of the scrap processing and recycling industry. Formed in 1987 with the merger of the National Association of Recycling Industries (NARI) and the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel (ISIS), the primary objective of this association is to bring about a greater awareness of the industry's role in conserving the future through recycling and in increasing recycling by promoting Design for Recycling. Founded in 1948, the BIR is a non-profit, non-governmental organization financed by annual membership dues paid by its 35 affiliated national sectoral federations and by some 500 member companies which are active in the collection, processing, transportation and recycling of materials which are diverted from the waste stream.
