Cat dealer Tractors Singapore Limited demonstrated its offshore capabilities in December 2013 by becoming the first Cat dealer worldwide to successfully complete an inclination type approval test for the Cat® C280 - 16 offshore power module, a generator set that delivers industry-leading power density and performance.
For the inclination type approval test, a marine classification society surveyor from Det Norske Veritas (DNV) was onsite to ensure that the test procedure was carried out in accordance to the Norwegian Maritime Authority Emergency Generator Requirement (NMA Reg4 Sec11). In Norway, a tilt test is required for emergency generators operating on offshore drilling rigs in the North Sea, such as jackups and semisubmersibles, to be certified by the Norwegian Maritime Authority and meet NORSOK standards. In the event of an unforeseen loss of power on a rig, an emergency generator set is required to provide life support power until all personnel is evacuated from the rig. The degree the test is performed at varies depending on the type of rig is set to be installed on. If the generator set will be installed on a semisubmersible, the tilt test is performed for 4 hours, operating at full load on an inclination of 25 degrees. If the generator set will be installed on a jackup, the tilt test is performed for 4 hours, operating at full load on an inclination of 10 degrees.
For this test to be considered successful, the 5500 ekW @ 60 Hz (900 rpm) engine and alternator had to perform with 100% load for 4 continuous hours while tilted at a compound angle consisting of 25 degrees forward and 25 degrees toward the left hand side of the engine when viewed from the flywheel. This ambitious particular angle was chosen as it is the most potentially stringent inclining condition for the engine, to simulate the harsh operating conditions in a semisubmersible unit working in deep waters offshore.
The Cat C280 offshore power module was certified by DNV to comply with the inclination requirement of NMA Reg4 Sec11, validating the efforts and hard work of the TSL Power Systems and Caterpillar teams. TSL is proud to be one of the few Cat dealers with the proven capability to successfully conduct a type approval test.
