Caterpillar Low Emissions Upgrade Kit Demonstrates Value to Customers in Field

For Worldwide Release: October 2014

A long-standing industry workhorse, the Cat® G3516 lean burn engine has emerged over the years to become synonymous with providing reliable power in gas compression applications. Originally introduced to the market in 1985, the engine platform has logged countless hours in applications throughout North America, as a high-speed power supplier that positively impacted customers’ bottom lines. Regardless of the altitude, heat or load, the engine was engineered to perform in the most rugged locales and it has delivered, time and time again, developing a loyal customer base in operations across the United States and Canada.

As the engine has been racking up countless hours in the field, external factors such as emissions regulations have changed the performance parameters for high horsepower applications in gas compression. When the Caterpillar Oil & Gas engineering team set out to define a solution to reduce NOx engine out emissions, the driving factor guiding the new product introduction was the need for the solution to be applicable on existing G3516 engines in the field, enabling operators to achieve emissions compliance with the trusted yellow iron they’ve come to rely on.

With an emphasis on upgrading existing engines without sacrificing power, Caterpillar Oil & Gas unveiled the G3516LE Low Emission Upgrade kit in January 2014. The upgrade kit allows operators to retrofit existing engines at 2.0 g/bhp-hr nitrogen oxides (NOx) engine out emission levels.  The kit enables operation at 0.5 or 1.0 g/bhp-hr NOx not-to-exceed (NTE) engine out emission levels.  The emission limits are driven by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Spark Ignited (SI) Stationary regulations and more stringent regulations in regional non-attainments areas.  The ability to meet emission requirements in non-attainment areas allows for continued use of existing G3516 assets in the field.

Caterpillar engineers didn’t stop at solely ensuring compliance on existing assets when developing the G3516LE upgrade kit. Instead, the Lafayette, Indiana-based team arduously worked to deliver a comprehensive solution that would exceed expectations and provide customers with value-enhancing benefits to leverage on their existing G3516 engines. The results were impressive: not only does the G3516LE upgrade kit deliver compliance without sacrificing the 1340 bhp @ 1400 rpm power rating but it also offers increased altitude and speed turndown capability.  Caterpillar Oil & Gas engineer Brenna Geswein commented on the development of the minimally-invasive kit noting, “From initial development to the inception of gas compression products, we are committed to continuously introducing compliant solutions that power our customers to better performance and the G3516LE upgrade kit was no exception. We designed the upgrade kit to be installed as quickly and easily as possible without sacrificing any dimension of the engine’s performance in gas compression applications.”

Since its introduction earlier this year, the kit has been incredibly successful. The ease of conversion to the upgrade has proved to be invaluable in the field, avoiding the dreaded downtime that can plague third-party conversions. The Cat upgrade kit conversion can be done with the engine at its operating location, eliminating the time and costs of transporting the engine to a dealer rebuild facility.  Trained experts at customers’ local Cat dealer are available to be dispatched to the operation site to bring current engines up to the latest technology level, regardless of where the engine is in its lifecycle. As a Caterpillar factory solution, the kit is backed by Caterpillar standard warranty and available to order from the Cat dealer network.

Geswein commented, “We have been extremely pleased with the initial success of the G3516LE upgrade kit and are thrilled the legendary G3516 platform can continue to evolve with our customers’ needs and outperform competitor offerings.”
