New Cat® 3512E Land Electric Drive Drilling Engine Improves Fuel Consumption While Significantly Reducing Emissions

For Worldwide Release: May 2016
ME Number:00028320

Houston, Texas – Land drilling customers seeking a proven, reliable engine that both meets U.S. EPA and CARB Tier 4 Final emissions standards and improves fuel consumption have their solution in the new Cat® 3512E Land Electric Drive Drilling Engine, on display this week at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) 2016.

“Our 3500 engine platform is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, and over that time it’s proven itself in the toughest oil and gas applications,” said Diana Hopkins, Land Drilling and Production Marketing Manager for Caterpillar Oil & Gas. “The new 3512E is built on that robust platform, specifically designed for the application demands of modern electric drilling rigs. It delivers significant emissions reduction without sacrificing any of the performance our customers have come to expect from Caterpillar.”

To meet Tier 4 Final requirements, which call for approximately 45% lower NOx emissions than Tier 2 levels, the 3512E features proven NOx Reduction System (NRS) technology that’s been in use since the 1980s. This simple yet highly effective system requires no Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) for emissions reduction and pairs with a passive, maintenance-free aftertreatment system.

“The 3512E delivers more than just emissions compliance—it’s made to last and engineered to provide low cost of ownership to  our customers,” Hopkins said. “Improved fuel consumption and longer overhaul intervals translate into lower lifecycle costs. Quick and easy service means more productive working time. And like all our products, it’s backed by world-class dealer support, available anywhere in the world.”

Ease of integration is built into the 3512E’s design as well. The engine’s footprint is similar to the current Tier 2 engine model and packages into current master skid designs  with minimal changes. Compact dual diesel oxidation catalysts enable configuration flexibility and ease of packaging.

To validate the performance of the 3512E, Caterpillar conducted extensive validation across multiple applications, totaling more than 75,000 hours. In addition, three major drilling customers field-tested the new engine for more than 10,000 hrs total in on drill Rigs.
