Supplying Reliable Power in East Africa
Caterpillar® power generators are playing an integral role in supplying far more than just a reliable source of electric power in East Africa. In the Mtwara and Lindi regions of Tanzania, natural and agricultural resources are plentiful, however economic development in these regions has long been hampered by a lack of reliable electric power supply and infrastructure. Artumas Group, Inc. has been restoring power to these regions, which are home to 1.9 million people, by augmenting energy supplied by isolated diesel-fired generators operated by Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO). This major initiative included the construction of 27km of terrestrial and marine gas pipelines, and a cooperative effort with the local Cat® dealer, Mantrac, who supplied the Cat G3520C generators. Only five months after completion, power load in the region had increased by 25 percent and local businesses—such as cashew nut factories—are seeing steady economic growth.
Extracting Essential Resources
Through our products and services, we play an important role in helping miners extract and deliver coal, copper, iron ore, nickel and other metals and minerals as efficiently and cost effectively as possible. We're working with mines around the world to hold down the overall cost of providing raw materials and to protect the environments in which they operate. We also participate in the life cycle of resources in ways that might not be obvious. At Rio Tinto Minerals' Montana mine, for example, some of the talc extracted is used to produce a critical component in our catalytic converters—part of our diesel emissions reduction technologies.
