Steven Geerdink – Director of Works, Shire of Dowerin, WA.

Steven Geerdink has been working at the Western Australian Shire of Dowerin for 20 years.

So it's fair to say he knows a thing or two about motor graders.

As the Director of Works for the Shire he is actively involved in purchasing decisions when it comes to acquiring heavy construction machinery.

"I used other brands early in my career" explains Steven. "But for the past fifteen years, it's been strictly Cat® Loaders and Graders."

"You just can't beat them for pre and post service and reliability."

"We do a lot of road construction and maintenance grading of gravel roads and new roads. We grade around 2000 kilometres of gravel roads per year. So we need machines we can trust and that will offer us a good return on our investment."

As a Cat purchaser, how has Steven found the M Series graders?

"They’ve been great for us" Steven enthuses. “We've had one for three years and absolutely no problems with it. So we bought another 12 months ago and it's worked really well too."

“The change for our operators to using the joysticks has been really easy to be honest - they picked it up really quickly. Sure at first they were a little dubious, but once they got in and started playing around with the controls, it was not a problem.”

“I’ve gotten in there myself and started using the M Series. It’s fantastic. The joysticks are great for eliminating fatigue. You don’t have to lean forward or move your body around as much. So at the end of the day you don’t feel too bad.”

“In the long term the better comfort, greater visibility and easy-to-use joysticks means we’ll get more done each day. That can only be good for business.”

“If we have happy operators it makes life a lot easier”.

And the Caterpillar back-up?

“It’s the best around” replies Steven. “You just can’t fault the service from the WA Cat dealer WesTrac. We’re 160km away from Perth, yet they get to us within a day and parts to us at most within two days. Time is money and we certainly don’t lose much if any at all with Caterpillar.”

“I’m not surprised Cat motor graders have been around for 80 years. They get better and better all the time. Caterpillar certainly knows what they’re doing.”
