For Worldwide Release: September 27, 2017
Release Number: EEPR1417
PEORIA, IL – Caterpillar Inc. today announced the introduction of the Cat® PVT117 photovoltaic module, a new solar component that uses thin-film technology to offer better power density, higher specific annual energy yield, and improved long-term performance and durability.
Compatible with advanced 1500V plant architectures, each module delivers 117.5 watts of nominal power in a compact design that provides up to four percent more installed capacity per square meter when compared with conventional silicon-based modules. It also delivers up to 10 percent higher specific annual energy yields through a superior temperature coefficient, better spectral response in humid conditions, and better shading response.
The Cat PV117 photovoltaic module has been independently tested to pass accelerated life and stress tests beyond industry standards. It produces highly predictable energy in all climates and applications, and it is certified to perform reliably in high temperature, high humidity, and extreme desert and coastal environments.
The Cat PV117 photovoltaic module is available now through the worldwide Cat dealer network. “The market for solar power technologies has become increasingly competitive, and customers demand a combination of efficiency, durability, reduced owning and operating costs, as well as an optimized footprint,” said Tom Frake, vice president of the Global Power Solutions Division for Caterpillar. “With the introduction of this new photovoltaic module, we are further strengthening our compelling portfolio of industry-leading solar technologies, local support through the Cat dealer network, and collaborations with proven suppliers who can deliver specialized equipment and expertise.”
Advanced Solar Technologies from Caterpillar
Caterpillar’s solar photovoltaic offering is a key component of the Cat Microgrid suite, an innovative lineup of power systems that adds environmentally friendly solar panels, state-of-the-art energy conversion and storage technologies, and advanced monitoring and control systems to Caterpillar’s traditional line of reliable power generation equipment, including HFO, natural gas and diesel generator sets, switchgear and automatic transfer switches. The Cat Microgrid technology suite is designed to reduce fuel expenses, lower utility bills, decrease emissions, and reduce the total cost of ownership while increasing energy efficiency in even the most challenging environments.
A key differentiator in Caterpillar’s offering is the Cat MMC, which keeps loads continuously energized with high-quality power at the lowest cost. It manages the flow of power from every source in the system, including the main grid when connected. The Cat MMC determines optimum recharge times for the energy storage systems while managing power during times when solar energy is not available.
The MMC also uses Cat Connect technology for real-time collection and communication of on-site performance data that can be monitored and analyzed remotely.
The Cat bi-direction power (BDP) module uses a world-class insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) to seamlessly control the charge and discharge of energy storage options, which can range from traditional lead-acid batteries to lithium-ion applications.
