Cat 390F Features Advanced Hydraulic System, Fuel-Efficient/Emissions-Compliant Engine, Multiple Front Linkages, Enhanced Operator Comfort

The new Cat® 390F hydraulic excavator, with a maximum operating weight of 88,700 kg (195,500 lb.), is designed to deliver high production at low operating costs, featuring a fuel-efficient engine and an advanced hydraulic system. The 390F's design builds on the durability, reliability, and performance of its predecessor models, adding the exclusive Caterpillar Adaptive Control System (ACS) valve that ensures optimum hydraulic efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. Enhancements in operator comfort and safety, plus advances in serviceability, combine with available Cat Connect technologies and a selection of front linkages and work tools to ensure versatility and optimum customer value. 


With a net power rating of  391 kW (525 hp), the 390F's Cat C18 ACERT™ engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV emission standards and controls emissions with no interruption in work cycles. Fuel-saving features include three power modes—Power, Standard and Economy—allowing operators to select engine operating speeds to match the application. In addition, an on-demand-power system adjusts engine speed to match the operating load, and an engine-idle-shutdown system stops the engine after it idles a pre-set interval. These systems reduce fuel burn as much as 25 percent, compared with the 390D, while also reducing emissions and extending service intervals.

The 390F's hydraulic system is designed with major components in close proximity, an arrangement that allows shorter connecting tubes and hoses to reduce frictional losses and pressure reductions, resulting in reduced loading on the system for added fuel savings. New for the F Series is the ACS valve, which electronically manages flows and restrictions to exactly match hydraulic response to joystick movement, smoothing hydraulic functions and increasing hydraulic efficiency. The ACS valve also includes an automatic hydraulic-oil warm-up feature that allows the machine to go to work quicker.

The new model can be equipped with auxiliary hydraulic circuits, allowing the use of powered work tools that can be easily attached with a hydraulically activated coupler. The tool-control option allows programming flow and pressure for up to 10 work tools. For further fuel savings, electrically controlled regeneration systems in the boom and stick circuits move oil between the cylinder ends to reduce the load on the main hydraulic pumps.

Structural strength

The 390F is available with a choice of front-linkage configurations—heavy-duty reach (HD), general purpose (GP), and mass excavation (ME)—with all booms and sticks fabricated with premium-steel plate and using high-strength castings and forgings in high-stress areas. All are stress-relieved for durability and inspected ultrasonically for quality. A choice of sticks is available to match booms for meeting required digging depths, reaches and breakout forces. Linkages are compatible with work tools for D2 and E Series models.

Structural durability is ensured with heavy-duty construction of the mainframes and undercarriage. The upper frame incorporates special mountings to support the heavy-duty cab, and the lower frame is heavily reinforced for long-term durability. A long-track undercarriage, featuring massive track roller frames and high-tensile-strength-steel components, provides a wide, stable working base. Pins and bushings are grease lubricated for extended service and reduced sound. A counterweight-removal device is available to facilitate transport.


Increased glass area in the F Series cab enhances visibility for the operator. Special sealing and insulation keep the operator’s environment clean, comfortable, and quiet, with operator sound levels reduced by a significant 3 dB(A).

The new monitor offers a larger screen with higher resolution with more intuitive navigation. The monitor is programmable in 42 languages and presents detailed machine operating data as well as images from the standard rearview camera. Climate control includes air conditioning and filtered-air ventilation; seat options include air suspension and heated/cooled versions.

Routine maintenance points, such as grease fittings, fuel and oil filters, and taps for oil sampling and pressure checks are conveniently grouped and safely reached behind wide, latch-type service doors from slip-resistant catwalks. A fuel-tank drain evacuates water and sediment to protect the fuel system, and an integrated fuel-level indicator reduces the prospect of overfilling. The side-by-side cooling system is easily serviced and uses a reversible fan.

Cat Connect Technologies, such as LINK, GRADE, and DETECT, make smart use of technology and services to improve jobsite efficiency. LINK technologies, such as the optional Product Link™ system, help fleet owners manage equipment productivity and lower owning and operating costs through the online VisionLink® interface, which tracks critical items, such as location, hours, fuel usage, diagnostic codes, and idle time.

The latest technology addition is Cat Payload; it provides real-time weighing as the boom swings for fast, efficient loading and optimum payloads. You can view weights on the standard cab monitor and know when target payload is achieved, maximizing productivity of your entire fleet. Productivity can be tracked right in the cab—with quick access to payload weights, load and cycle counts, and daily totals. Site managers can wirelessly access payload data and machine operating data via VisionLink.

F-Series machines also offer optional GRADE technologies, such as AccuGrade™ and Cat Grade Control Depth and Slope, to assist operators work more productively and accurately; systems can be upgraded to 3D capability when job requirements change.
