New E Series Hydraulic Excavators Combine Fuel-Efficient Performance with Powerful Hydraulics, Operator Amenities and Jobsite Versatility

For Release in Australia, New Zealand: February 2014
Release Number: 517PR13

Twelve new Cat® E Series hydraulic excavator models, with operating weights from 13 100 to 53 300 kg, are now available for the Australia/New Zealand territory. All models meet U.S. EPA Tier 4-Interim, EU Stage IIIB, and Japan MLTI Step 4 emission standards and deliver fuel-efficiency gains from 3 to 12 percent, versus their D Series predecessors. The new models feature heavy-duty major structures to ensure long-term durability and reliability, powerful hydraulic systems that easily handle a wide range of Cat buckets and work tools, and refined operator stations that provide the ultimate in comfort and convenience.

The range of sizes in the new E Series line allows customers to match machines to job requirements, ensuring efficient production and low operating costs. The long undercarriage, standard on most models, provides an optimum platform for both digging and lifting, as well as overall balance when handling work tools, such as hydraulic hammers, grapples, and shears.

Choices are further extended with the compact-radius 314E CR and 314E LCR, designed to keep the upper structure within the edge of the tracks when working over the side. The reduced-radius 320E L RR has a tail-swing radius 750 mm shorter than the conventional 320E L, thus keeping the upper structure within the length of the tracks when working over the front, and a larger counterweight provides a 16-percent increase in lift capacity.

The new models add further value to the customer's investment with available grade-control technology and the Cat Product Link™ telematics system, a powerful fleet-maintenance tool that can protect machine health, guard against unauthorized use, reduce operating costs, and increase utilization. As always, standing behind every Cat machine is the Cat dealer network, ready with competent people and the latest technology to support the customer's efforts.

Engines and hydraulics
Cat engines used across the range of new E Series models (C4.4, C6.6, C7.1, C9.3, and C13) have Cat emission-control technologies best suited to the particular model. Emission control is transparent to the operator, having no effect on the machine's duty cycle or performance. Ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (15 mg/kg sulfur) or biodiesel blends (up to B20) complying with EN 14214 specifications are required, as are Cat DEO-ULS™ or equivalents engine oils.

Overall hydraulic efficiency (doing the most work with the least oil flow) is an outstanding characteristic of E-Series hydraulic systems. These systems feature high-pressure main- and auxiliary control valves, electronically controlled swing-priority valves that reduce cycle time, and electronic oil-regeneration valves in boom and stick circuits to reduce main-pump load. All deliver high hydraulic horsepower—the best measure of a machine's hydraulic working power.

Structures, serviceability
All E-Series models feature heavy-duty upper structures, massive car bodies (lower frames), and high-strength track-roller frames, the foundation of the undercarriage. Undercarriage components are designed as a long-wearing system, and the track system features grease lubricated pin-and-bushing assemblies to resist internal abrasion, a major source of undercarriage wear.

Front linkages for E-Series machines feature booms and sticks fabricated of high-strength steel in an exceptionally strong box-section design with internal baffles for added durability. Each is ultrasonically inspected to ensure absolute quality, and depending on the specific model, a choice of booms and sticks allow customers to tailor the machine to the application.

E-Series models feature ground-level access to most routine service points, including pumps, filters, radiator, oil cooler, and air-to-air cooler. A radiator reserve tank and drain valve simplify service, and a central grease block allows easy lubrication of difficult-to-reach linkage points. S•O•SSM (Scheduled Oil Sampling) ports ensure quality fluid samples, and convenient hydraulic test ports allow safe, accurate checks of system pressures.

Operator environment and safety
A ROPS cab and an available Falling Objects Guard Structure afford a safe environment for the E-Series operator, as do anti-skid surfaces, steps on the track frame, handrails, and time-delayed lights that facilitate safely exiting the cab. Powerful halogen work lights are standard, and available high-intensity-discharge lights provide even greater night visibility.

Using viscous-rubber mounts that dampen both vibration and sound, the ergonomically designed E-Series cab is both quiet and comfortable, featuring low-effort joysticks, intuitive controls, and a full-color, multi-language LCD monitor. Large windows ensure all-around visibility and promote job-site safety, and a rearview-camera system adds immeasurable to overall visibility. A large skylight provides overhead visibility, natural lighting, good ventilation, and an emergency exit.

Air-suspension seats, with heating and reclining backs, are available with cooling system to promote comfort and productivity in harsh environments. The climate control system features five air outlets with positive filtered ventilation, and the standard radio is equipped with a new auxiliary audio port for MP3 players. Two 12-volt power supply sockets are located near key storage areas for charging electronic devices.
