What if you could add a machine to your fleet that is capable of loading trucks or handling material for hours — one that delivers the versatile performance and fast cycle times your work demands but uses no fuel and generates zero emissions in the process? With the Cat® 906 Compact Wheel Loader, that may soon be a possibility. This fully electric machine, currently in the concept stage, is on display at bauma 2019.
Based on the existing Cat 906M loader, a model known for market-leading performance and excellent versatility, the 906 electric concept is powered not by a diesel engine but by a sealed lithium-ion battery and dedicated high-torque electric motors. That means it emits no particulate matter, no NOx, no CO2 and limited noise, making it an ideal loader for work in urban environments or public areas.
The 906 electric concept’s 41 kW battery takes about three hours to charge. On a fully charged battery, the concept machine can operate in a medium-duty application, such as mixed truck loading or material handling, for up to 4.5 hours (up to 6.5 hours with a one-hour charge during the lunch break).
When the next generation of the 906 electric concept featuring a larger battery is introduced, working times are expected to increase to eight hours, in line with many working shifts. Additional built-in charge modes may be available as well, including a rapid-boost mode to take maximum advantage of short recharge periods when the machine is idle and a slower overnight mode to condition the lithium-ion batteries and extend battery pack life.
The goal with any fully electric product is to achieve performance levels comparable to those of its diesel-powered equivalent — and testing so far shows that to be the case with the 906 electric concept. Though the concept machine weighs in slightly heavier than the 906M, that’s expected to change with the next generation concept.
Thanks to a powerful, quick-responding electric drive, the loader can reach top speeds of 20 kph for fast cycle times on the job. Batteries are sealed and maintenance-free, with no need to monitor liquid levels or add water. Service demands are minimal, with only hydraulic system servicing and greasing required. And operating the 906 electric concept requires no significant changes for operators used to diesel-powered models. A display inside the cab shows the state of charge and motor information.
Rather than the HYSTAT transmission featured on the 906M, the 906 electric concept uses dedicated electric motors for the drive train, implements and steering. Due to dramatically lower sound levels, the concept machine is highly versatile — increasing the viability of working indoors, in highly populated areas, around livestock and after hours or overnight.
The 906 electric concept’s design team continues to work with customers on real applications and jobsites to finalise machine development and ensure the machine meets users’ expectations when it goes into production in the future.
