When designing the new Cat® F-Series Wheeled Excavators, Caterpillar solicited customer input for characteristics considered important. The list included initial quality, reliability, low operating costs, operator comfort and safety, simplicity of operation, ease of maintenance, durability, and environmental friendliness. The new M314F is designed to meet those customer requirements, while retaining the best features of its M315D2 predecessor, including the Cat Smartboom™, ride control, load-sensing hydraulics, dedicated swing pump, hydraulically driven cooling fan, large working envelope, a choice of booms and sticks for configuration versatility, and a wide selection of attachments.

Comfort and Safety

The exterior of this new model has been completely restyled, including a completely new ROPS-certified operator's cabin featuring higher pressurization, larger door with added glass, new windshield with parallel wipers, new mirrors (with a heated option), new rain visor and light protectors, a larger skylight, and a standard rearview camera (housed in the redesigned counterweight) and a standard right-side camera with a separate in-cab monitor.

Entering and exiting the cabin is now easier with redesigned access steps and door handrail. Inside the cabin, the left-hand console tilts to facilitate entering and leaving the seat, and the console includes an integral safety lever. Also new is the steering wheel, which is height adjustable and features a tilting column.

The standard lighting package for the new models now includes a counterweight light (enhancing the rearview camera function at night), three cabin-mounted working lights, and a light on the boom. Standard LED lights replace the previous halogen lighting for enhanced illumination, lower power consumption, and longer life.

Easy to operate, maintain and service

An automatic system, when enabled by the operator, senses machine parameters and locks the axle-oscillation function and sets the service brakes, readying the machine to dig. This feature reduces operator fatigue by removing the need to constantly press the brake pedal, resulting in added productivity. The brake and axle locks automatically release when the operator presses the travel pedal. To further simplify the operator’s job, a new blade with a redesigned profile allows material to roll more easily in front of the blade.

Also new is the travel-lock system (engaged via the switch panel) that activates implement-stop and swing-lock functions. For further convenience, cruise control is a standard feature, allowing the operator to choose the speed desired with the Quick-Access button on the monitor. Operators also can adjust the machine to the task and to personal preference, as well as easily adjust hydraulic pressures and flows for various attachments at the same time.

The M314F also incorporate a PIN-code anti-theft system. For operator convenience during short breaks in production, the system remembers the last code entered before engine shutdown and allows that code to remain active for a period of time.

The engine, as in the predecessor model, is longitudinally mounted with the cooling package forward of the engine, resulting in easy, ground-level access to routine maintenance points. An electric fuel-priming pump eliminates filling filters before installation. All coolers are now grouped in the same compartment, and the condenser can be tilted without tools for ease of cleaning. Electrical and hydraulic components are now grouped in specific areas for ease of service, and an automatic centralized greasing device (Auto-lube) is standard.

Fuel Efficiency and Sustainability

The M314F’s Cat C4.4 ACERT™ engine is rated at 110 kW (150 metric hp) maximum net power and meets Korea Tier 4 Final emission standards. This new engine features refinements that yield added torque and faster response to changes in load.

The C4.4 ACERT, with a durable, field-proven design, integrates an emissions after-treatment system, which requires no attention other than periodically replenishing the diesel exhaust-fluid tank. Emissions technology includes the Cat NOx Reduction System, selective catalytic reduction system, no-maintenance diesel oxidation catalyst, and high-pressure/common-rail fuel system. The engine meets required emissions standards without a diesel particulate filter.

Optional Cat Bio HYDO™ Advanced hydraulic oil and bio-diesel blends (up to 20 percent mixed with ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel) can be used without reducing system life.

An engine-idle shutdown system saves fuel by stopping the engine after preset a idling interval. In addition, the Eco Mode has been refined to reduce engine speed with no reduction of power, further reducing fuel consumption with no compromise in performance.
