Matt Veerkamp was born the year his dad launched Doug Veerkamp General Engineering Inc. By the time he was 10 he was helping in the service shop, and by age 12 he was digging septic systems—even though he wasn’t quite tall enough to reach the pedals.
Today father and son run the business together. They also collect antique tractors built by Caterpillar and its two founders. Their oldest machine is 97.
Matt says the old tractors have at least one thing in common with the rest of his Cat® fleet. “They’re practically indestructible. There’s a commitment to quality you can see and feel and believe in.”
It’s that legacy of quality and longevity that drives the Veerkamps’ acquisition strategy. “We like to pick up used Cat machines, buy new Cat parts from our dealer and let our service techs work their magic. We’re happy to recover the value someone else walked away from.”
But when business is strong and good used machines are in short supply, Matt says the Veerkamps go new. “We bought two new Cat excavators in 2014 and financed them with Cat Financial. We expect to get a lot of life out of them.”
New, used or antique, the Veerkamps’ Cat machines just keep running—perpetuating the family legacy for generations.
