Mine Expansion Power

Reliable power and flexible purchase options delivered to iron ore facility

With a goal of producing 55 million tons a year, the largest iron ore facility in Western Australia needed a temporary power source for its expanding mine site, which was under construction in a remote area of Australia.

Roy Hill was designing a new mine, a process plant, a heavy haul railway system from mine to port, and new port facilities. Their initial plan was to operate and maintain a temporary power generation facility for two years, with options to extend up to 10 years. They needed continuous, reliable power up to 35 MW.

Working with Cat® dealer Energy Power Systems Australia (EPSA), they arrived at a solution: a power station with 30 Cat XQ2000 rental modules, each containing a Cat 3516B diesel generator set installed in a 40-foot container, supplying all of the energy needs for the port facility.

EPSA’s general manager, Bill Thomson, says “EPSA’s ability to understand Roy Hill’s unique requirements and customize a facility for this demanding and desolate environment made them stand out from competition.” With rental power equipment, the customer and the dealer usually set a fixed rental period. EPSA and Caterpillar offer rental solutions that contain flexible purchase options not offered elsewhere, such as seamlessly converting to a permanent installation.

“EPSA and Caterpillar worked together to provide the customized design, generation technology, and delivery solutions to benefit the customer," said Thomson. Read the in-depth details by downloading the Power Profile.
