Wherever you go in the marine world – from cruise liners, ferries and cargo ships to offshore vessels, tugs and dredgers – you’ll see and hear distinctive MaK engines. The power solution of choice, particularly for medium-speed propulsion thanks to its long-stroke philosophy to lower fuel consumption and emissions, these heavy fuel oil, marine diesel, gas and dual fuel engines have built up a healthy fanbase around the world. And now, with the complete assembly line and local suppliers in China for the M 20 G engine, MaK is making even more friends in Asia.

"Our product quality and timely delivery are the most important things to our customers”

Exacting standards
At the Anqing assembly plant, performance is measured in microns

You have to go back over 150 years to Kiel in Germany to chart the birth of MaK. At first, the company developed and produced surface and submarine torpedoes but by 1922 they were developing and manufacturing diesel engines for ships and trains. And it was in 1948, the MaK brand emerged along with first deliveries of the M 24 and M 36 marine diesel engines. That’s where the story really gathers pace and where-over the next few decades—MaK’s diesel engine range of two- and four-stroke engines as well as high-performance versions began to emerge.

GETTING CLOSER TO THE CUSTOMERS

But in China, there’s nothing new about the concept behind its Anqing diesel engine assembly plant. It’s all about delivering tried and trusted MaK engines using tried and trusted quality standards from Germany to local customers here in Asia. We met up with Luo Jianxin, the Quality Technical Manager who showed us around the impressive facility that produces M 20 G engines in a complete assembly line and making full use of local suppliers.

It’s all about giving customers in Asia the same benefits as customers closer to production in Germany. Luo explains, “We mainly produce marine engines with an assembly capacity of approximately 100 units per year, and our test platform has a capacity of 100 units per year.”and new technology such as CAT Asset Intelligence and CAT Multiple-Engine Optimizer to monitor and optimize engine performance and customer operations.

QUALITY FROM START TO FINISH

For Luo, it’s his job but also a source of immense pride that engines produced here are of the same quality and follow the same process all the way to the customer who signs off on the quality of their purchased engine.“ First of all, our quality management system is a duplicate of the one in Germany, with the same quality control process,” he points out. “ Secondly, the parts we use are of the same quality as the German ones.

Thirdly, we have technicians from Germany supervising our assembly and testing. Our inspection process with customer sign-off is also the same as in Germany.” Because that quality and reliability is what MaK has long stood for and what the customer expects. Nothing revolutionary about that. In fact, Luo Jianxin and his colleagues hope those customer demands never change.
