Operators who know how to get the most out of every machine can drive big bottom-line results for your operation. They’re more productive and accurate. They use less fuel and make fewer errors. And they’re less likely to cause accidents or equipment damage.
But with skilled operators in short supply, how do you get new employees up to speed fast—and keep your seasoned pros happy on the job? Cat® Connect Technology and Services can help you tackle these challenges. Cat Connect is an intelligent suite of hardware, software and services that can help improve operator performance.

Based in Minnesota, where long winters shorten the working season, Veit & Company must make the most of every working hour—and that means every operator must be on the top of his or her game. By implementing Cat Grade technology, the company has seen big gains in operator accuracy, leading to production increases of 30 - 50 percent. The men behind the controls say it couldn’t be easier to achieve those results.
“You just click the button, put it in gear and go,” says operator/engineer Terry Dehkes. “I think it increases our production big time.”
Fellow operator Allen Newgard agrees, “With the GPS system, I can customize all my displays and the mode of operation. It tells you all the information that you need to know. It’s the most operator-friendly piece of equipment I’ve ever run.”
Dealing with a labor shortage in Utah, J&B Excavating owner Brenen Newman recently put his 19-year-old son to work operating equipment. Good thing his machine was a Cat 323 excavator equipped with Grade with Assist.
“He picked it up the first day,” Newman says. “The second day he dug a basement by himself without a grade checker. I don’t know that a guy with 20 years of experience could do that.”
Both father and son appreciate the simplicity of the 2D technology, which is all contained within the excavator itself—no base station, no satellite and virtually no training required. “This machine is a trainer,” Newman says. “You can put an inexperienced operator in it, and the machine will train that operator how to dig flat and how to hold grade.”
Derek Ashley, an operator for Alabama-based Timmy Hall Timber and Construction, arrives on the job at 6:30 a.m. and works 12 hours a day, five days a week. That’s a schedule that could burn anyone out—but working in a technology-equipped Cat machine, Ashley can run all day with minimal stress and fatigue.
“It pretty much runs itself,” says supervisor Josh Jacobi of equipment featuring Cat AccuGrade.™ “You click a button and it works.”
Owner Timmy Hall knows that keeping employees like Ashley happy on the job matters. His tight-knit group of talented operators is one of the keys to his success—and retaining them is a lot easier when they go to work every day in machines with the latest technology.
“Technology is what’s kept me in business,” Hall says. “GPS, for instance, has made the job so much easier to operate. It makes my job run real smooth.”
