Cat® Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Technology

Ventilation Reduction Engine Provides Scalable Emission Solutions for Better Underground Air Quality

More and more we see requests for Tier 4 Final or EU Stage IV options on our underground equipment to satisfy a growing need to improve the underground environment for workers.  The good news is there are alternatives, and they can reduce emissions to a level below what’s required for Tier 4 Final.

For Cat® Underground Mining hard rock vehicles, we developed a Ventilation Reduction (VR) engine that can be combined with diesel particulate filters to drastically reduce particulate matter.  Cat Tier 3 engines have done a great job of meeting Nox reduction targets as required by regulations  – but particulate matter rises as NOx comes down. This is precisely what our VR engine addresses - it offers low Nox emissions but also reduces diesel particulate matter.  Combine this engine with our diesel filtration solutions and technology and you have a very clean running machine.

If you are looking for solutions that can be retrofit to your existing fleet, please read more about the solutions Caterpillar can offer, or reach out to your local Cat Dealer for more information.

In 2016, world-leading resources company BHP mandated that its underground operations use only machines that meet Tier 4 Final emissions regulations. Learn More about Cat DPF Technology

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) are the preferred Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) reduction technology for the most demanding underground machine applications.

Cat® Ventilation Reduction (VR) engines utilize selective engine hardware and software to lower DPM while maintaining low overall emission levels during the engine combustion process.

Cat DPFs – Flow Through Filters (FTF) and Wall Flow Filters (WFF) are designed to work with VR engine packages on Cat underground LHD’s and trucks to effectively minimize the DPM level down to greater than 50 percent or greater than 98 percent, respectively.
