Material Movement

Material Movement: Working To Plan

Moving material is a primary activity on mine sites. Material is moved during site development, during the building and maintenance of haul roads and throughout the production cycle. Detailed plans are put in place to manage these activities — ensuring that operators are moving the right amount of material to the right place at the right time.

On-board technologies are making it easier for operators of motor graders, loaders, large dozers, scrapers and draglines to meet their targets and work to the mine office’s plan. These systems use Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) technology, a wireless radio communication network and office software to map mines, create terrain models, locate a machine's position and track volume and productivity with complete accuracy.

Inputs from the office tell operators where to dig or cut, how much material to move, when they’ve moved enough and even if they’ve moved too much. The systems reduce errors by showing loader operators exactly what material is being loaded and what remains unloaded—resulting in better cycle times and improved loading productivity.

In addition to supporting operators in the field, technology also enables production managers to monitor and accurately report on multiple mine processes. Software allows them to track the amount and types of material moved versus plan, as well as an overview of drilling operations. Managers can view information by machine, within a production area or for an entire pit.

New technologies that track and manage material movement are having a significant impact on mine site productivity around the world. How does your site track material movement? Have you leveraged technology to help in this effort? Share your experiences on Facebook or Twitter.
