It all started with dreams and ideas. Innovation, hard work and perseverance took them the rest of the way.
It was two families - Holt and Best – whose companies would one day merge to become Caterpillar. In the beginning, the Holts made wagon wheels. The Bests built portable grain cleaners. Over the years, both companies grew, each developing outstanding new lines of farm equipment and other types of machinery. Initially, it was steam-powered machines with large wheels. Holt added tracks to their machines and became the first to invent a commercially successful track-type tractor. The competitive spirit of those early companies no doubt fueled innovation that lives on today.
On the track, Richard Childress Racing is also a homegrown success story. It started in Richard Childress’ home garage where he established the race team that bears his name. He bought his first race car – a 1947 Plymouth that had been used as a taxi – for $20 and he never looked back. It has grown into one of the largest motorsports organizations in NASCAR.
The essence of what was started decades ago continues! Engineers and designers using state of the art equipment, software and techniques to push both companies forward. Concept to Reality takes you behind the scenes at Caterpillar and at Richard Childress Racing to see exactly what goes in to producing the amazing machines you see shaping the world… and how one of the premier race teams gets their cars on the track!
