Cat® Plow Systems For Longwall Mining

Proven Automated Plow Systems for Low Seam Coal

Plow systems for coal mining date back to the 1940s where the first plow was put into production in the coal rich region of Western Germany. Today we live in a world of fast advancing technology and mechanization - so why are will still talking about a system that is so old? Because in the right applications, a plow system from Caterpillar can be the most efficient, cost effective means of extracting low seams of coal. Modern day plow systems have benefited from this longevity and experience and today - these systems can be working at maximum production while being remotely operated from the surface. A plow system will stay in the coal, and minimize cutting into rock. In seams of a approximately 1.7 meters, we've had customers averaging 10,000 tons/day.

Cat® Automated Plow Systems

Plowing is the preferred longwall mining technique for seams below 1.8 m (71 in), and under specific geological conditions, even below 2.3 m (90 in). Today, Caterpillar is the market leader in the field of fully integrated and automated plow systems. Sophisticated Cat® automated plow systems today operate with drive powers of up to 1.6 MW (2,150 hp) and speeds up to 3.6 m/s (700 fpm), extracting up to 1,500 metric tons per hour.
