Oliveira Energia to install 34 Cat® C175-20 diesel generator sets for Eletrobras Distribuição Roraima utility

PEORIA, IL– Caterpillar Inc. today announced that Oliveira Energia has signed an agreement to purchase 34 Cat® C175-20 diesel generator sets to supply more than 100 MW of continuous power for Eletrobras Distribuição Roraima, the government-operated electrical utility serving the Brazilian state of Roraima.

The C175-20 generator sets will be installed at a new 94,000 square-foot (8,700 square-meter) facility in the capital city of Boa Vista.  With each unit delivering 3600 kVA of power at 13.8 kV, they will serve as the primary source of power for this municipality of 266,000 residents in northern Brazil. The generator sets will replace power previously supplied from Venezuela, allowing the region to become more self-sufficient and spurring economic and social development.

The C175-20 generator sets were manufactured in Lafayette, Ind., U.S.A.  Shipments began in July, with the final group of units arriving in Boa Vista in mid-September.  They traveled 600 miles (960 km) by boat up the Amazon River to the inland port of Manaus, and then another 460 miles (750 km) by truck through the Amazon jungle and indigenous territories to Boa Vista. Oliveira Energia plans to open the plant in December of 2014.

Sotreq, the local Cat dealer, will supervise the installation of the generator sets and support Oliveira Energia through commissioning and the initial operation of the power plant.

“For many years, the power supply in Boa Vista has been unreliable, impeding economic development throughout the region,” said Orsine Oliveira, president and chief executive officer of Oliveira Energia.  “These Cat generator sets will not only serve as a consistent, reliable source of power for local residents and businesses, they will also deliver the stability that this region needs for lasting economic and social progress.”

The 20-cylinder C175-20 generator set produces up to 4 MW of power for standby applications, the greatest output of any single high-speed diesel generator set available on the market today. It requires less maintenance and provides the highest power density of any current high-speed generator set. A single 4 MW C175-20 represents a 55 percent reduction in footprint when compared with two 2 MW Cat 3516B generator sets, and a 28 percent reduction when compared with a 4 MW Cat 3612.

The increased power density is a key benefit for standby power at large, mission-critical installations, such as data centers and hospitals.  The C175-20 generator set can also be used for peak shaving/grid stiffening, as prime power for remote work sites, and as the sole source of power to remote communities.

“This installation in Boa Vista demonstrates the full value proposition of the C175-20,” said Diego Sabetta, industry representative for Caterpillar Electric Power Division. “By selecting the power-dense C175-20 to reduce the number of generator sets needed for this project, Oliveira Energia has substantially lowered transportation, construction, installation, and integration costs, which in turn reduce the overall budget and accelerate the completion of the project.”
