Citadel Drilling Ltd. Chooses Cat® Dual Fuel Power Solutions for their Rig Build Program

Calgary, Canada - Caterpillar Oil & Gas announced today that the Cat® 3512C land electric-drive drilling modules with Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) have been selected to power Citadel Drilling Ltd’s, (“Citadel”) new fleet of Technically Advanced AC Triple drilling rigs  which will comprise 12-14 rigs over the course of the next five to six years. Three Cat 3512C modules each with rated power of 1045 eKW (1476 bhp) @ 1200 rpm, will be used to power each land drilling rig. The first three Cat DGB units have been delivered and tested and are slated to be field operational by the end of June 2014 on Citadel’s first rig. Cat dealer Finning Canada led the Caterpillar efforts on the sale and will continue to deliver stellar support and service to the Citadel team.

“Citadel has only chosen vendors that have the ability to add value to both our own and our customers’ operations. Our customers will save in excess of $50,000 per month in fuel savings by utilizing our rigs equipped with the cost-effective Cat DGB power and CNG or Field Gas supply,” Dan Hoffarth, Citadel’s CEO said. “The Cat DGB solution has operational consistency and a fantastic support team in Finning Canada and is, in my opinion, the dual fuel leader in the industry.”

The Dynamic Gas Blending kit automatically adjusts to changes in incoming fuel quality and pressure allowing engines to run on a wide variety of fuels, from associated gas to vaporized LNG with no loss of performance integrity. It maintains diesel performance levels with up to 70 percent replacement of diesel with gas, accepts up to 55 percent inerts and can be applied to existing engines with EPA certification. No customer input or gas analysis is needed during operation, and no recalibration is required when the equipment is moved or the gas supply changes.

Additionally the Cat DGB kit received off-road aftermarket parts certification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as well as EPA approval under the Field Fix provision. The Cat DGB system is certified for use with fuels with a Lower Heating Value (LHV) of between 905 BTU/scf to 1250 BTU/scf, giving operators a wide range of fuel options while meeting Tier 2 emission levels. “Citadel Drilling just experienced the most trouble free start-up and generator syncing process in our electrical/automation providers’ history.  The engines were put online, synced and power shared better than any project we have been associated with,” Hoffarth noted.

"With the Cat DGB solution, our customers like Citadel have the ability to get the job done and reduce the overall costs for their clients. Our dual fuel products coupled with the dedication of Cat dealers like Finning Canada provide a differentiating combination of quality and support that customers can count on,” Aaron Jenkins, Caterpillar Oil & Gas Canada territory sales manager said.

Hoffarth added, “I’ve been dealing loyally with Cat products for almost 25 years which means to me that Caterpillar is doing a lot of things right.”
