Power Failure: Not An Option With Pon Power, Cat® Emergency Generator Sets

The new Eldfisk 2/7  platform, an integrated platform with a 154-man accommodation module, wellhead, and process facilities, needed reliable emergency power to weather any unexpected loss of power in the mercurial North Sea. Slated to operate in one of the largest oilfields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, the Eldfisk also required complex power solutions capable of meeting NORSOK specifications as well as other unique design requirements. Fortunately, local Cat® dealer Pon Power was armed to equip the Eldfisk with a solution tailored to meet the region-specific requirements.

For Pon Power, a single-source supplier for all power applications in Scandinavia, this project represented yet another chance to showcase their unique abilities to provide a fully customized solution backed by Caterpillar. The Pon team engineered the essential and emergency power solutions for the platform, three Cat 3516C generator sets with AvK alternators. Two of the 3516C generator sets provide essential power for the platform, while the other 3516C provides emergency power for the platform. With a total power rating of 2.5MVA, the generator sets were delivered to the customer skid- mounted, including a control cabinet. The generator sets are also seawater cooled from an existing system on the platform. Delivered to meet NORSOK specifications, the generator sets were also designed to be placed in a HVAC ventilated room.

Cat 3500 generator sets for the offshore industry feature a robust diesel strength design, which prolongs life and lowers owning and operating costs, a benefit only offered by Caterpillar. The generator sets are assembled, tested, and validated as a package to minimize package vibration and maximize component life. In addition to market-leading power density, the generator sets also offer a long overhaul life proven in oilfield applications.
