Small and compact machines are susceptible to theft because they’re easy to transport and often hold high resale value. Cygnus Business Media’s 2014 Construction Theft Survey reports that 83 percent of construction equipment owners were victims of theft and 64 percent never recovered the equipment. In fact, one company’s experience with machine theft led to a complete overhaul in fleet management strategy. Ideker Inc., a family-owned construction operation based in St. Joseph, Missouri, has had two machines stolen in the last 12 months.
TECHNOLOGY FACILITATES "MANUFACTURING DISCIPLINE" IN MINING
The days of rapid expansion in mining are over for the current market cycle, according to a recent article in Financial Times magazine. Mining reporter James Wilson says that cost cutting and productivity improvements now rule the day. But, he says, the mining industry has already taken the easy steps by laying off staff and contractors and cutting budgets for exploration.
Now, miners are having to work harder to find additional gains. Wilson talked to a number of mining industry players to find out what they're doing to achieve those gains and discovered that technology, especially information and connectivity technologies, are leading the way.
CATERPILLAR HELPS REVIVE DIESEL MECHANICAL LOCOMOTIVE PRODUCTION IN ROMANIA
With a long history of repairing and refurbishing rail vehicles, Reloc is breaking new ground with a brand new diesel mechanical locomotive. This year, with the help of Caterpillar, it launched the Terra Nova – a new locomotive with more power train versatility.
The Terra Nova was launched in Romania this May by the mayor of Craiova and representatives from Caterpillar, Reloc, and Cat® dealer Eneria Romania. The locomotive is designed for export, with expectations to fill orders throughout Europe and beyond in the coming years.
