In Unfamiliar, Murky Waters, Cat® AccuGrade Shines

There are an estimated 1.2 million alligators living in Florida’s innumerable marshes, swamps, rivers and lakes. The hard-hat wearing divers working underwater for Cat customer Dickerson Florida Inc. on a canal job just north of here tried very hard every day not to think about that number as they waded into the deep, murky depths.

The $8.9 million slope stabilization project was part of the South Florida Water Management District’s ongoing effort to clean up Lake Okeechobee, the source of fresh water for 8.1 million Florida residents and the sensitive Everglades ecosystem.

3D Paving Drives Race Track Construction

A racetrack project requires smoothness, and the National Corvette Museum Motorsports (NCM) Park was no exception. 3D paving technology reduced engineering costs and helped meet tight tolerances on this paving job.

The NCM Park, located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, is a test track for Corvettes, with the Corvette museum and a General Motors factory less than a mile away. Project specifications prohibited deviations of more than 3 mm (1/8 in.) around the track and a smooth joint in the center of the course surface.

Tight Spaces and Tight Deadlines Are No Match for Cat Customers Inside the State Farm Center

How do you get several 10-foot-tall excavators through a tunnel that’s only nine feet, six inches high? That’s just one of the challenges faced by contractors working inside the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“It sounds like it’s a large place, but it’s actually very tight,” says Jamie Powell, president of JP Excavating & Trucking, one of those contractors and a long-time Cat customer. “There are lots of trades, lots of companies working in there.”
