PT Muria Sumba Manis Transforms a Rocky Start into Sweet Success

PT Muria Sumba Manis (MSM) was established in 2014 with the goal of bringing the sweetness of high-quality sugar to people’s lives. Over the last decade, MSM has become a prominent name in Indonesia’s agriculture sector specializing in sugarcane plantation and processing, an accomplishment made all the sweeter by the obstacles they overcome to achieve it.

When they first established their factory on Sumba Island in 2018, the MSM team faced an uphill battle. The Sumba Island site—a remote location with land consisting mainly of hard limestone—was not an obvious choice for a sugarcane plantation.

“It seems impossible to imagine anything could grow here,” the MSM team admits. “But with sincere passion and hard work…we’re [changing] all that.”

Breaking Through Doubt

All that hard rock needed to be broken up by heavy machinery before planting could begin, but the MSM team was met with skepticism by several equipment providers. The remote location and lack of existing infrastructure made coordinating support more challenging, and not everyone was convinced the venture would be successful – but Trakindo Cat® believed in MSM’s vision.

The team at Trakindo worked with MSM to find solutions for operating in the site’s extreme conditions and ultimately provided a full machine fleet, with everything from excavators and dozers to paving equipment—more than 80% of the land was prepared for planting with a Cat RM500 road reclaimer. MSM officially began planting sugarcane in 2020, and the company has been growing ever since. Today, the factory can process as much as 6,000 tons of sugarcane a day.

MSM is committed to maintaining sustainable growth while “living and growing in harmony with the Sumba Timur ecosystem and society.” The company has considerable room to continue growing, as they are currently only using 30% of their land. The remaining 70% remains unprepared for now, waiting to be transformed from hard rock to fertile soil.

Sharing the Sweetness of Success

Like all great construction projects, the venture’s success has been a victory for both MSM and the entire Sumba Island community. As the largest company in the region, MSM’s growth has brought numerous jobs to Sumba Island—they currently employee 90% of the local residents. The development of the plantation and processing factory has also supported the expansion of vital infrastructure throughout the region, including electrical grids, internet access, and local transportation, increasing local quality of life and lowering the barrier to entry for future businesses looking to invest in East Indonesia.

The challenges MSM faced and the incredible results they have achieved are a testament to what is possible when hardworking people have the support they need to make their vision a reality. What started as a far-off dream has grown to benefit the infrastructure and economic growth of an entire community. We can’t wait to see MSM continue to grow—and we’ll be there to continue helping them break through obstacles as they do.
