Safe Host Engages with Cat® Dealer Avesco for 19.2 MVA Standby Power Solution from Caterpillar for Data Center Expansion in Gland, Switzerland

For Worldwide Release: March 9, 2021
Release Number:  EEPR0621

DEERFIELD, IL – Caterpillar Inc.  today announced that Safe Host, one of Switzerland’s largest hyperscale and colocation data center providers, has selected Cat® dealer Avesco to supply a 19.2 MVA standby emergency power system for the expansion of its data center in Gland.

Avesco engineers will design, install, and commission the solution that includes six Cat C175-20 diesel generator sets. The project is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2021 as part of a planned doubling of current capacity.  To facilitate operator health and safety, system security and uptime, each of the Cat C175-20 generator sets onsite has been factory-finished with a unique paint color that matches the section of the facility it supports.

“It’s incredible how such a simple idea has added so much value to our health and safety initiatives, and as we continue to expand, we plan to implement this system across all of our facilities,” said Faiz Tandon, sales director and co-founder for Safe Host. “Caterpillar shares our focus on safety, and their ‘Safely Home. Everyone. Every Day™’ initiative fits so well with our own efforts and ethos. Caterpillar understood why we needed these colors, and they made it happen.”

Safe Host uses Cat standby power solutions exclusively at all four of the company’s data centers, which are located in Geneva, Gland, Avenches and Zurich, Switzerland.  Since the company’s inception in 2000, Safe Host executives have always trusted their data centers’ emergency power needs to Avesco and Caterpillar, selecting the Cat dealer to install and commission a total of 34 Cat diesel generator sets, which range from the 2250 kVA Cat 3516 to the 3200 kVA Cat C175-20.

“Safe Host is trusted by clients who demand secure, cost-effective and reliable colocation solutions that deliver the continuous availability of critical infrastructure and application services,” said Bart Myers, general manager, Caterpillar Large Electric Power. “Caterpillar power solutions and Avesco expertise provide the sturdy backbone to support Safe Host’s comprehensive safety measures, rapid growth and ambitious plans for the future.”

Cat dealer Avesco will also provide ongoing maintenance and service under a Cat Customer Value Agreement (CVA). Through fully customizable CVAs, Cat dealers assume responsibility for the on-site maintenance and service of power solutions, enabling customers to focus on running their enterprises.

Inaugurated in 2017, Safe Host’s state-of-the-art data center in Gland is Switzerland’s largest carrier-neutral colocation facility. It features 40 MVA dual power feeds and the capacity to host 3,600 racks for servers across its 14,400 square meters (155,000 square feet) of floorspace.  It meets the growing demand for companies to host their systems in Switzerland, where they benefit from the country’s abundant hydroelectric power and strong legal framework that supports data protection.

Cat power solutions help data centers meet uptime commitments at hundreds of facilities around the world. Caterpillar’s portfolio includes efficient generator sets with high power densities integrated with automatic transfer switches (ATS) and switchgear specifically customized for continuous, standby, and temporary power applications at data centers.

Caterpillar is also positioned to support data center customers by leveraging innovative technologies that improve their sustainability profiles through hybrid microgrids and energy storage solutions as well as the use of renewable fuels.

Caterpillar delivers innovative power systems engineered for exceptional durability, reliability and value. The company offers worldwide product support, with parts and service available globally through the Cat authorized service and dealer network. In addition, dealer technicians are trained to service every aspect of Cat equipment.
