Nuns & Cat®: Building Faith with Heavy Machinery

In 2018, a community of Discalced Carmelite nuns bought a former farm in Drasty, a small village on the outskirts of Prague. They were seeking to move to a quieter location, more suited to their life of prayer and contemplation than their monastery in the center of Prague could offer.

Purchasing the farm was only the beginning of their journey—the land was overgrown, and the existing buildings were in disrepair. With funds in short supply, the nuns took it upon themselves to begin bringing their vision to life.

“For us it was natural to participate in the reconstruction effort, not just to save money but because work is also a part of our spiritual life,” explained Sister Marie.

Completed in 2024, the Drasty monastery was more than a construction project. It’s a reminder that anything is achievable when the power of community is combined with the right tools. One of those tools was a Cat® 232D3 skid steer loader, loaned to the nuns by the owner of a local construction company, Petr Novotný.

“All these machines and tools are a great help, and the sisters soon learnt how to operate them,” said Sister Marie. Sister Terezka had logged over 300 hours of operator time by the end of 2023, and Novotný readily admitted believing she could out-operate many of the machinists he knew.

Now completed, the new monastery is more than a home for the sisters. Its guest rooms offer refuge to those seeking seclusion and its chapel is open to the public, offering a place of peace and faith to the community that supported its construction.

“I see it as a miracle,” Sister Terezka said. “And I understand that it isn’t just our work, but the collective effort of all of us. Without our helpers, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”
