Fueling a Century of Sugar Cane Farming

How Hawthorne Cat Continues the 100-Year Legacy of Caterpillar in Hawaii

Polynesian settlers introduced sugar cane to Hawaii more than a thousand years ago. And for more than a century, farmers on the island have relied on Cat® machines to harvest that sugar cane for a variety of goods. Shay Smith, founder of Maui-based Ocean Organic Vodka, continues that legacy today.

Raising cane in Hawaii with Cat® agriculture equipment

“Here at the farm, we utilize a lot of Cat equipment,” says Shay. His Ocean Organic Farm and Distillery harvests a kind of sugar cane known as kea, the main ingredient in the distillery’s number one selling vodka.

Shay relies on a Cat skid steer and mini excavator for a variety of jobs around the farm—from making roads and installing irrigation systems for agriculture to maintaining the farm and harvesting. But when Shay has a project too big to tackle alone, he calls his local dealer: Hawthorne Cat.
