Balance large site loads while ensuring power quality with the new Cat BESS. Capable of storing surplus power from any combination of diesel, natural gas, renewable wind or solar, biogas, or hydrogen or blends of hydrogen, the system guarantees short-term, dependable backup power for a wide range of applications. Thanks to its grid stabilization and energy time shifting technologies, the innovative Cat BESS can help stabilize transient loads, supply and absorb alternating current (AC) power, and transfer energy from time-of-generation to time-of-use. 

In addition to securing a steady power supply for emergencies, the Cat BESS allows stored energy to be used when it's windy or cloudy or during times of high energy costs. Battery energy storage also enables participation in grid services markets to avoid costs or to receive financial compensation. Support site loads with a system having the scalability to grow with your operation as it leverages on-site generator sets and moves toward more renewable energy source incorporation.

The flexibility and robustness of the Cat BESS makes it ideal for a broad spectrum of applications, including off-grid mining and oil and gas production facilities, industrial and commercial operations, independent power producers (IPPs) and small utilities, data centers, small municipalities, and university campuses.

Steady Power No Matter the Load

Protect against many typical power problems, including power failures, voltage sags/surges, and under/over frequency conditions. When used with generator sets, the Cat BESS provides the reserve power capacity to decrease the transient voltage and frequency dips associated with large loads. Cat BESS modules are particularly well-suited to maximize the performance of high-efficiency lean-burn natural-gas generator sets operating in island mode and applications where power quality is critical.

Products

The commercially available modular packages store energy from the over production of the renewable energy source for use when it is not available and provide temporary backup power to facilities in the event of a power outage. The Power Grid Stabilization (PGS) model is available in a heavy-duty mobile version, the PGS HD, which offers high-power discharge for stabilization of on-grid or off-grid systems. 

The ETS, ECE, and PGS modules protect against:
  • Power/grid outage
  • Voltage sags/surges
  • Under/over frequency conditions
     
System Safety and Reliability

The Cat high performing bi-directional power (BDP) inverter is an integral part of PGS and ETS modules. The Cat BDP1000’s integrated controls provide complete control of the charge and discharge of the BESS. Based on technology developed for Cat electric drive machines, the Cat BDP1000 provides the following:

  • Battery control and communication interface
  • Battery state of charge control
  • Multi-mode operation
  • Grid forming, firming, and following capabilities
  • Seamless mode transfer between charging/discharging
  • Islanding detection – automatic anti-islanding
  • Autonomous mode or remote-control mode
