Caterpillar is dedicated to building up the workforce and making training and learning easier. We’ve developed Cat® Ease of Use technology to help new workers get to grips with the machinery in less time with more accuracy - and to support current operators in their day-to-day work. This means increased productivity on the ground, confident workers, improved safety and better control of costs. In this article, you can find out more about how the technology works and what our customers say about it.

What is Ease of Use and how can it make work easier for operators?

The Ease of Use system is designed for the Cat® next-gen mini excavators 306CR, 308CR and 309CR. This innovative technology helps your team do their best work. We’ve developed two packages: Ease of Use E-Fence and Indicate to install confidence in your operators.

E-Fence for easier operations on site

The Cat® E-Fence is a boundary set by the in-cab touch screen monitor, used to limit the motion of the machine. This in-cab technology enables your team to quickly upskill, getting the job done efficiently and with confidence. It is useful for inducting new employees, where a supervisor can set the parameters as a safety measure. And it also means that on-the-job training can commence quickly, making best use of costs while supporting the team on site.

Operators can work confidently in tight spaces using one or a combination of these four modes:

  • Swing – enables the operator to work safely next to a roadway, knowing that the machine won’t swing out into traffic or cause an accident.
  • Reach wall – protects structures and buildings in front of the excavator by setting a boundary in the front of the machine.
  • Ceiling ⎼ sets a limit to the height that any part of the machine will reach, to avoid damaging overhead power lines, tree limbs, low ceilings and even bridges.
  • Floor ⎼ used to avoid hitting pipes and ground cables and causing damage to drainage systems.
E-fence will save the company some money…they’ll be less of you doing the job round the machine. I think the E-Fence would help people new into the game [with] the safety side of it

Indicate for a smart and efficient workforce

Cat Ease of Use Indicate helps operators to efficiently dig to a flat depth, or to create an accurate slope. The work is guided by an in-cab monitor, giving visible and audible feedback throughout the pass. This enables your operators to get the job done with increased satisfaction as they can do it in fewer passes, and with less need for grade checks throughout your work. It also means that if you have anyone designated as a grade checker, with Indicate they could be redeployed elsewhere on the site, adding to the overall productivity of you team and helping to control costs.

Cat® E-Fence and Indicate systems come equipped with additional features to upskill your operators, increase productivity, and promote safety.

  • Swing Assist: makes it easier for machine operators to return to the trench each time.
  • Bucket Assist: retains the angle of the bucket at its last setting.

Both settings are helpful to your operators, reduce the need for extra assistance outside of the machinery, freeing up workers to other parts of the job so that you can keep within budget.

“Using Ease of Use for this machine, we’ve been able to increase production, decrease waste and we can save our customers money. It enables me to have confidence in my numbers to win the job.“
