Cat® Generator Sets Amplify Toronto Power and Efficiency

Enwave Energy Corp. upgraded downtown Toronto and the historic Pearl Street plant with renewable energy from Cat® G3516 Generator Sets.

With the demands for economic modernization and renewable energy on the rise, Enwave Energy Corp. was faced with some important decisions. As a leading provider of district heating, cooling, water, and boiler systems for a large region of downtown Toronto, they required an efficient and powerful system for reliable service.

In the midst of expanding one of its original steam plants, Enwave added two Cat® G3516H gas-powered generator sets. These gensets capture heat from the exhaust and use it to generate low-pressure steam and hot water. Efficiency is increased by 33% as a result of not requiring a separate source of natural gas to heat the water.

“In our CHP system, we generate electricity first and then harvest the heat out of the exhaust gas,” says Kris Landon, Enwave’s director of construction and project management. “We’re saving on natural gas and emissions by doubling up. This plant operates 24/7, 365 days a year, so the generator sets were a perfect match for us—they are highly efficient and reliable.”

“The CHP project was a very complicated installation—we put some very large engines into a very small place, and we had tremendous support from our partners at Toromont Power Systems and Caterpillar throughout the entire process,” Landon says. “Everybody understood what our time and technical constraints were. It’s the dependability that we’ve come to expect from Caterpillar and our Cat dealer.”

Many industrial facilities such as manufacturing plants, refineries, and regional district heating plants; or commercial facilities such as resorts, shopping malls, high-rise office buildings, universities, data centers, and hospitals, can reduce operating costs by implementing a Cat® CHP system (also known as cogeneration) using clean pipeline natural gas as a fuel source.
