What is biogas?

We understand your goal is to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reach your sustainability goals, but you need to do so in a way that makes economic sense. It’s a challenging task, but biogas could be the exact answer your business needs.

Biogas is an economical alternative to fuels like diesel and natural gas. It uses your organic waste sources (municipal solid waste, landfill, manure, wastewater sludge, crop residues) to produce valuable energy. When combined with cogeneration, or a combined heat and power (CHP) solution, you can also provide heating and thermal power to your sites.

This makes biogas a long-term solution to deliver power in a cost-effective way no matter how the energy landscape shifts, while minimizing the impact of accumulated waste.

How Does A Biogas Plant Work?

  1. Create Biogas:
Various source materials, known as organic waste, go into anaerobic digester(s) and create biogas.
  2. Fuel Your Power Assets:
This biogas fuels the generator sets, which produce energy for your site(s).
  3. Maximize with CHP:
When the generator sets are running, they produce heat, which is usually wasted and released into the surrounding environment. With a CHP solution, you can recapture that waste heat energy and use it to provide thermal heating and hot water to your sites, saving you using additional energy.

What are the benefits of biogas?

of
Environment

Environmental

Using biogas as your energy source can help reduce a site’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

of
Economic

Economic

Biogas can help lower operational and energy costs and create new revenue streams for wastewater treatment plants and farming.

of
energy

Energy

Biogas tends to have a higher reliability rate than other established renewable energy sources e.g. solar PV and wind.

of
resiliency

Resiliency

Biogas is often produced and consumed on the same site. This  reduces dependency on the larger electric grid in the case of unplanned power outages.

Who Can benefit from biogas?

of
Agriculture & Livestock

Agriculture &
Livestock

Agricultural residues such as manure and slurry can be used in biogas production and can mitigate further air, soil and water pollution.

of
Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency

Landfill & Waste Management

Landfill waste produces a significant amount of methane. By capturing biogas in landfills, you can significantly reduce your greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

of
Waste Water Management

Waste Water
Treatment

Treating sewage can efficiently convert leftover sludge to biogas energy, helping communities lower their waste treatment costs.

of
Food Production & Operations

& Operations

For the food and beverage industry, a biogas solution can be  extremely beneficial, producing both energy and cleaner wastewater effluent.
