Last year was a big year for landscaping, as we all spent more time at home and many people were looking for ways to bring amenities to them. We recently asked landscapers on Instagram to tell us more about the trends their seeing in 2021 and how the pandemic has affected the landscaping industry. Here’s what they had to say:

Business is Booming

77% of those who responded to our Instagram poll said that they’ve seen an increase in business as a direct result of people spending more time at home during the pandemic.

Taking that a step further, 67% of those who responded to our Instagram poll also said that they’ve added new services to their business within the last year.

So what exactly does this mean in terms of 2021 landscaping trends?

A Rise in Outdoor Living Spaces

People have been cooped up in their houses and are looking for more ways to enjoy the outdoors without leaving home. This was especially prevalent during stay-at-home orders last year, but this is a trend that we can expect to see continue because outdoor living spaces are perfect for individuals and families as well as gatherings and entertainment spaces.

Whether it’s a three season or screened-in porch, a gazebo with a pond, or simply a deck or patio for grilling, outdoor living spaces can make a big difference not only in the enjoyment of the homeowner but also in the home’s value overall.

Other outdoor space trends on the rise include multi-season greenery (as a result of spending more time in our own yards throughout the year) and gardening. With more time at home, gardening is an increasingly popular hobby. Ranging from traditional raised bed vegetable gardens to pollinator gardens, vertical gardens, and even native plants or drought tolerant landscaping – there are many ways for you to customize a plan to your region and to specific customers’ needs and their specific space requirements.

Bringing Amenities Home

Fireplaces. Fire pits. Patios. Pools. Ponds. Lighting. Stereo.

During a period of time where we couldn’t go out to eat, meet up with friends, or attend concerts and events, many people began exploring ways that they could bring some of these amenities to their home and build entertainment spaces right in their back yards.

Hardscaping brings a variety of options to homeowners looking to level-up their at-home spaces.

Yard Technology is on the Rise

Whether it’s yard technology that has been around for a while (such as subsurface irrigation or sprinkler systems) or newer developments like app-based or remote control systems, there are many ways that homeowners can expand a smart home to include a smart yard.

Some homeowners may be ready for larger projects like the above, while others may just be looking to install outdoor lighting or outdoor speakers – but with newer tech capabilities these too can all be controlled via app or smart device.

2020 brought many challenges, but we’re encouraged to see the landscaping business booming as people get creative and look for ways to bring more joy to their stay-at-home spaces. We’d love to hear more from those in landscaping and hardscaping – send us a message on Instagram and tell us more about the trends you’re seeing and how your business has changed over the past year.
