DEERFIELD, IL – Caterpillar Inc. today announced that the Town of Berlin, Maryland, has deployed a new 2 MW Cat® G3520 natural gas generator set to upgrade the municipality’s peak shaving capabilities.
Cat dealer Carter Machinery installed the new generator set, which joins a fleet of three other generator sets to operate about 100 hours over the course of a year and offset the cost of energy during periods of high demand in the summer and winter months. Town officials estimate that the upgraded system will save up to $600,000 in energy costs annually.
Additionally, the dealer will provide periodic inspections and service through a planned maintenance program that optimizes the performance of the power solution and helps the Town of Berlin maximize its return on the investment.
“For more than a century, the Town of Berlin has managed its own power generation capabilities to minimize energy costs for local residents and businesses,” said Jeff Fleetwood, the town administrator for Berlin. “The new high-efficiency generator set from Carter Machinery and Caterpillar provides the low-cost electricity we need while helping to achieve sustainability goals for the region.”
The Town of Berlin’s selection of a Cat gas generator set illustrates its wider efforts to preserve the natural beauty of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. For example, the town operates two spray irrigation facilities that recycle 100% of the town’s treated wastewater. The system naturally filters out nutrients and other organic compounds, preserves local groundwater levels, and eliminates adverse effects on protected waters downstream.“We take tremendous pride in offering the lowest prices for electricity on Maryland’s Eastern Shore,” said Tim Lawrence, electric utility director for the Town of Berlin. “This Cat gas generator set offers the reliability and low total owning and operating costs that will benefit the town’s finances and utility customers for years to come.”
The Cat G3520 is the first U.S. EPA-certified natural gas generator set rated at 2.0 and 2.5 MW for use in 60 Hz power markets. It is engineered to meet a wide range of critical market standards, including quick starting and loading capability.
Designed to minimize installation costs and commissioning time, the Cat G3520 generator set features a high-power density 20-cylinder engine that offers market-leading load acceptance and transient response.
“Local utilities are the lifeblood of their communities, and they require power generation capabilities that deliver reliability, durability, sustainability, and optimized total owning and operating costs,” said Bart Myers, general manager in Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division. “Cat gas generator sets are designed to deliver low-emissions, high-efficiency performance to the utilities and their customers who rely on them for the long haul.”
Caterpillar delivers innovative power systems engineered for exceptional durability, reliability and value. The company offers worldwide product support, with parts and service available globally through the Cat authorized service and dealer network.
