Caterpillar’s Leading-Edge Distributed Energy Resource Management System Optimizes Return on Investment through Onsite Power Generation.
For Release: May 5, 2025
IRVING, TEXAS—Caterpillar Inc. today announced the expansion of an integrated offering with Alectra Energy Solutions, a leading provider of integrated energy solutions. This collaboration enables Linamar Corporation, a diversified advanced manufacturing company, to reduce energy costs during periods of peak grid demand through the deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs).
Under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA), Alectra recently deployed 12 Cat® G3500 series natural-gas generator sets for behind-the-meter (BTM) power production at Linamar’s diversified manufacturing facilities in Guelph and Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
The project included construction financing facilitated by Cat Financial, while the local dealer, Toromont Cat, completed the engineering, procurement, and construction. The turnkey power systems are dispatched through Caterpillar’s distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) software solutions to reduce Linamar’s energy costs during periods of peak grid demand.
The fully integrated solution supports Linamar’s goal of operational excellence and energy efficiency while reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainability for its stakeholders including employees, suppliers, customers and communities.
“These capabilities from Caterpillar and Alectra support our long-term sustainable business model through an innovative and efficient energy solution that reduces our operational costs and enhances our position in a highly competitive industry,” said Jim Jarrell, CEO & President of Linamar Corporation.
“Alectra is committed to being a trusted advisor and long-term energy partner for our customers. This solution supports Linamar’s balanced approach to business growth by stabilizing long-term energy costs and enhancing resiliency amid rising power prices.” said Ammar Nawaz, VP, Distributed Energy Solutions for Alectra Energy Solutions.
“Our engagement with Alectra and Linamar demonstrates how our portfolio of power solutions leverages leading-edge digital technologies to improve performance and help customers achieve preferred energy outcomes,” said Melissa Busen, senior vice president of Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division.
Energy resilience with security against price fluctuations
DERMS software solutions from Caterpillar can help customers monitor, manage, and monetize on-site energy assets. The Cat Active Management Platform (AMP) monitors patterns from the grid and client facilities, analyzes opportunities in energy markets, and then dispatches DERs to maximize results without disrupting normal business operations.
Additionally, Utilities and Energy Producers can use Cat AMP to access DERs, enabling rapid increases in utilization of renewable sources of energy on the grid.
