A New Era for the Quarry & Aggregates Industry
By Caterpillar | Published April 22, 2025
Caterpillar is well underway in the expansion of its Autonomous Hauling System (AHS), Cat® MineStar™ Command for hauling, to meet growing demand from the small mining and quarry industries. Already at work at mine sites around the world, Command for hauling leverages Caterpillar's 30 years of autonomous innovation and experience. Now, the reality of autonomy in quarries is here.
Last month, Caterpillar showcased this expansion at bauma-Munich by unveiling the latest 65-tonne (71-ton) Cat 775 off-highway truck — the first next-generation design of off-highway trucks for the company and the first of this model engineered to enable fully autonomous capabilities in the future.
This comes just months after the debut of autonomous Cat 777 trucks operating at Luck Stone's Bull Run plant in Chantilly, Va., and marks a significant milestone in Caterpillar's objective to deliver an autonomous hauling solution for the quarry and aggregates sector. This collaboration with Luck Stone is helping Caterpillar gain further insights into quarry operations to inform the next generation of autonomous solutions specific to quarry and aggregate applications.
“We are using the lessons learned from working with our U.S.-based customer, Luck Stone, where we have MineStar Command for hauling installed on four Cat 777 trucks,” said Denise Johnson, Group President of Caterpillar Resource Industries. “The shift to the aggregate industry, where we are automating fewer trucks that don’t haul material 24 hours a day, is helping transform our technology and processes to manage smaller operations.”
Caterpillar's work with Luck Stone has demonstrated significant benefits, such as enhancing safety by minimizing interactions with heavy equipment, upskilling personnel with new technologies, and improving consistency and efficiency at the Bull Run quarry. Since November, the autonomous fleet at Bull Run has safely moved over 816,000 tonnes (900,000 tons) and has enabled more day-to-day consistency and flexibility in scheduling production.
Quarry operators like Luck Stone are increasingly motivated to adopt autonomous hauling to enhance safety by removing operators from harm’s way and ensuring safe interactions between staffed and autonomous machines. Additionally, it improves operational consistency by reducing the variability of haulage operations from shift to shift and during shifts.
The Cat 775 next generation truck has a planned introduction in 2026. Autonomous capabilities with MineStar Command for hauling are currently under development, and a release date will be announced at a later date.
Leveraging more than 30 years of autonomous innovation and experience, Caterpillar is transforming quarry operations with the Cat MineStar Command for hauling. In addressing the unique challenges of the mining and quarry industries, Caterpillar remains committed to enhancing safety and productivity to help customers build a better, more sustainable world.
