WORKSITE SAFETY: USE CAT® SAFETY DATA SHEETS AND ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS WHEN REQUIRED

To support compliance with federal regulations and ensure safer worksites, Caterpillar provides Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for CAT® products. These SDSs are available online and contain essential safety information for anyone interacting with Cat products.

In addition to SDSs, Caterpillar also offers supplemental safety documentation, including:

  • UN38.3 Test Reports for industrial-sized lithium-ion batteries
  • Li-ion Battery Safety Instructions

These resources help ensure the safe use, transport, and handling of hazardous materials and battery-powered equipment in alignment with international safety standards.

SAFETY DATA SHEETS (SDS)

SDSs are key requirements for maintaining compliance with international standards and national regulations. Employers must ensure that SDSs are readily accessible to all employees who work with hazardous substances, either electronically or in printed form. These documents must be available during normal operations and in emergencies (such as power outages), and they provide critical information including:

  • Product composition
  • Physical, health, and environmental hazards
  • Protective measures
  • Safe handling, storage, and transportation guidelines

UN38.3 Lithium Battery Testing

UN38.3 refers to a section in the United Nations Manual of Tests and Criteria that outlines requirements for testing lithium batteries prior to transport. These tests are designed to evaluate risks such as overheating, external short circuiting, and overcharge during transit. A UN38.3 test report confirms that a specific battery model has passed these safety tests.

Domestic and International Dangerous Goods transportation regulations require UN38.3 compliance to ensure lithium batteries are safe to transport via air, land, and sea. Most global regulators and authorities also mandate UN38.3 testing for market access.

Li-ion Battery Safety Instructions

This document applies to Caterpillar industrial-sized lithium-ion battery products placed on the European market and is aligned with European Union Harmonized Legislation. It includes critical safety guidance for users and handlers, such as:

  • Warnings for shock / electrocution hazards
  • Precautions for safe handling and storage

Additional procedures and references are also included to promote safe operation and regulatory compliance.
