Caterpillar Helps Bring Inaugural Sturgis TT Motorcycle Race to Life
Every August, bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts descend upon Sturgis, South Dakota for The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Since its inception in 1938 the rally has grown to become the largest motorcycle rally in the world, drawing in as many as 700,000 people annually, but the teams behind this iconic event still had bigger plans.
Last year the Sturgis Bike Rally joined forces with American Flat Track and Caterpillar to host the inaugural Sturgis TT, a unique half-mile race through the streets of downtown Sturgis.
The Cat® Rental Store, in partnership with Butler Cat, provided the machinery that was used to not only transform the streets of Sturgis into a world-class TT course, but also to revive the historic Jackpine Gypsies Short Track.
“The Caterpillar equipment that we used this year made the events so much bigger than they’ve ever been in the past,” said Brett Winsell, Chairman of the Board for the Jackpine Gypsies. “I can actually see the dream that we started out with 25 years ago, so we are very thankful. We couldn’t have done it without them.”
The storied history of the historic short track and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally came to life in a very real way through the Sturgis TT—dirt from the surface of the Jackpine Gypsy Short Track was used to build the track. “It’s hallowed ground,” said Brett. “It’s had countless races, historical races on that dirt.”
For Caterpillar Technology Marketing Manager Barry Littlejohn, getting to work on the iconic Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was a merging of passions: “I’m lucky enough to be a third generation Caterpillar employee, but just as important to me, I’ve been going to AFT bike races for that same amount of time…I could not be more excited to see big yellow iron being able to be a part of creating another thing that I love.”
