How to Install Rubber Tracks on a Compact Track Loader

Estimated read time: 2 minutes

Your Cat® compact track loader is built to get the job done, but over time, even the most durable rubber tracks wear down. When that happens, you can replace them yourself with the right tools and know-how.

In this video, we’ll show you how to remove and install rubber tracks on a Cat 299D3 Compact Track Loader. The same basic steps apply to most Cat Compact Track Loader models, so you can follow along no matter which one you run. You’ll see how to safely detension and remove old tracks, fit the new ones, and set the proper track tension for smooth, dependable operation. All so you can get back to work as soon and as safely as possible.

How to Remove Rubber Tracks

First, position your equipment on firm, level ground. For this service, remove any attachments from the quick coupler. Raise the loader arms and install the brace.

  1. Shut off the engine and place direction control in neutral.

  2. Use a suitable lifting device to raise the loader about 50 mm (2 inches) off the ground.

  1. Detension the track by releasing grease from the adjustment valve.

  2. Place the track bar tools, skipping two teeth between each.

  3. Rotate the track toward the idler you want to use for removal.

  4. Once the three bars are around the idler, make sure all surrounding teeth are disengaged.

  5. Use a pry bar to continue disengaging the track. Use cribbing to support the weight.

  6. Remove the rubber track and repeat the process on the other side.
