Battery Recycle & Recovery Process

Lead batteries are some of the most recyclable consumer products in the US. This remarkable rate is due to lead’s ability to be repeatedly reused in the production of new batteries without loss of performance.

Byproduct Reuse

The battery recycling process creates a sulfur oxide byproduct that cannot be reused in new batteries. At one of Caterpillar’s suppliers, a lead smelter maximizes the capture of sulfur oxides and reprocesses them into a liquid nitrogen sulfur solution. They then sell this solution to agricultural fertilizer manufacturers for use as a raw material. 21,800 tons of this solution were produced and sold in 2022.

Sulfuric Acid

A Caterpillar supplier patented a process for reclaiming sulfuric acid from used lead-acid batteries. At their acid reclamation facility, impurities are removed, and the solution is converted into new electrolyte while avoiding the disposal of hazardous waste. In 2022, the supplier recycled over 6 million pounds of sulfuric acid for new batteries.

Lead

80% of lead comes from recycled sources annually. In 2022, 188 million pounds of lead from batteries were collected and recycled by a Caterpillar supplier.

Plastic

Plastic

Polypropylene (plastic) is recovered, cleaned, and made into pellets for use in new battery cases and parts. In 2022, 83% of plastic used at a Caterpillar supplier came from recycled sources and their smelter recycled and reclaimed 10.2 million pounds of plastic.
