America’s inland waterways are critical to the U.S. economy. Spanning 27,000 miles across 38 states, these powerful rivers are used to transport over 600 million tons of cargo each year including grain, fuel, and other bulk goods1. These waterways pose unique challenges – from swift currents on the Mississippi River to narrow channels on the Intracoastal – and towboats must be equipped to overcome every possible circumstance.
The Cat® C32B marine engine empowers towboat operators to thrive on these crucial river systems. Built on a proven platform and enhanced for greater power and durability, the C32B is engineered to run longer and harder while providing more time on the water. It achieves a 50% increase in Time Before Overhaul (TBO) under certain operating conditions, significantly reducing maintenance downtime2.
The C32B delivers the dependable power towboat applications demand and features upgraded components that boost reliability and fuel efficiency. It’s also compatible with biofuels such as biodiesel and HVO, to ensure towboat operators can support customers’ evolving sustainability goals. Supported by the extensive Cat dealer network, the C32B helps towboat operators meet the intense demands of inland waterway service.
Depending on a vessel’s condition and an operator’s requirements, there are three ways to equip a towboat with the latest C32B technology: an engine upgrade, a Cat Reman exchange, or a full repower.
To enable C32 engine owners to experience the C32B’s benefits, a cylinder head upgrade is an ideal choice. This involves installing new C32B cylinder heads which provide enhanced valve materials, optimized cooling passages, and integrated fuel lines. Vessel operators can choose to upgrade to the C32B cylinder head anytime during planned maintenance or a major overhaul interval.
For vessels that are ready for a major overhaul but require a quick return to the water, consider a Cat Reman C32 engine replacement. With this option, the vessel’s existing C32 engine is exchanged for a remanufactured C32 that includes new C32B cylinder heads. The key advantage is speed, as leveraging Cat Reman’s offerings can save up to eight days of maintenance downtime compared to an overhaul. This allows vessel operators to return to the water quickly to resume tow operations.
With core return, this drop-in option delivers like-new performance at a fraction of the cost of new—making it a smart, budget-friendly solution. Vessel operators also receive the benefit of a same-as-new Caterpillar Limited Warranty3. For an operator that demands modern performance with minimal interruption, a Cat Reman C32 with new C32B cylinder heads can be an excellent option.
A full repower – replacing the current engine with a new C32B – equips new and existing vessels with a state-of-the-art engine built for heavy inland service. While a C32B repower may require a larger upfront investment compared to an upgrade or Cat Reman engine, it extends a vessel’s service life and reduces operating costs. Importantly, repowering a towboat with a new C32B ensures the vessel remains U.S. EPA Tier 3 compliant. This helps operators avoid the cost and complexity of Tier 4 aftertreatment systems. A C32B repower prepares a towboat to provide reliable service for decades to come.
Each approach has merit, and a careful balance of budget, time and operational requirements ultimately determines the option that is best for a given vessel. Consult your local Cat dealer for expert guidance.
