Sustainable solutions that lead the way

The voyage to future emissions reductions starts here.

Multiple Solutions, One Goal

While reducing lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a common goal, there is no single solution that can meet the needs of every vessel, location and operating profile. That’s why achieving this goal requires multiple solutions working together. From biofuels to alcohol-based fuels like methanol to electrification, we've got lower emissions solutions to meet your goals today and in the future.

Biofuels – Worth Your Consideration

Fueling the Future

FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) are popular with customers who want to lower lifecycle GHG emissions while keeping tailpipe GHG emissions essentially unchanged. They can be particularly beneficial on existing vessels, in service already, where other solutions just may not be practical.

The Big Picture on Biofuels

From a well-to-wake perspective, biofuels can reduce carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) lifecycle GHG emissions. It’s important to consider their carbon output through the whole value chain.

Moving the Dial on Methanol

The future of emissions reduction

Whether your goal is to reduce GHG emissions, increase fuel flexibility, improve safety and performance, or optimize efficiency – our engines are designed to operate on methanol fuel. Specifically, our 3500E dual-fuel engines can enable methanol to provide a comparable performance to diesel, which is well-suited to the growing interest in marine fuel flexibility.

Methanol is Ready for the Maritime Industry

Methanol provides benefits like high miscibility in water, which is better for the environment in the case of spills. It’s also relatively energy-dense and expected to be a more cost-effective option.

POWERING THE FUTURE

Electrification is an important and proven choice used by various industries for meeting emissions targets. Caterpillar Marine is developing marine class-certified batteries and shoreside charging solutions for the maritime industry. This development enables vessel operators to connect.

Caterpillar’s hybrid vessel system combines diesel, methanol, and other alternative fuel propulsion engines, offering an alternative fuel option that supports lower emission, with high-capacity batteries for operation during low-speed or in-port activities.

Caterpillar is delivering hybrid marine driveline products and driveline system controls to optimize power flow, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and fuel optimization. The driveline components consisting of propulsion engine (diesel, methanol, or other fuel type), clutch, electric motor, VFD drive, battery, display, and control system all provided from Caterpillar and supported by our Cat Dealer network.
