Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes starter failure?
Starters are designed for intermittent duty — 30 seconds maximum. Extended cranking can lead to overheating, which can cause damage to windings, solenoids, electrical contacts and pinion teeth.
How do I remove an old starter?
Open the engine hood and turn off the battery disconnect switch. (If your machine doesn't have a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables.) Remove the nut and disconnect the cables. After you remove the nuts, you can take out your old starter.
NOTE: Always consult your machine's Operation & Maintenance Manual for specific instructions.
How do I install a new starter?
Put the new starter into place and install all the nuts. Connect the harness and cables. Turn the battery switch back on and test your new starter to make sure it's working properly.
NOTE: Always consult your machine's Operation & Maintenance Manual for specific instructions.
Why should I choose a Cat starter at replacement time?
Cat starters are optimized to match the torque requirements and specifications of your Cat engine, with high quality components engineered to exceed industry standards. They feature:
- Starting capacity down to -40°C for some models
- Sealed design to protect against corrosion, vibration and extreme weather
- O-ring sealed flywheel housing — not a gasket — to stop oil leaks and keep water out
- Packaging and wiring integrated into your Cat engine
- Rotatable drive housing for flexible mounting.
