How to Install Cat® Side Cutters on Buckets
Estimated read time: 2 minutes
Your bucket faces tough conditions on every job. Bucket side cutters increase digging productivity and provide a strong, wear-resistant surface that protects bucket sides from impact and abrasion. These components also enhance digging efficiency, making it easier to cut through trenching wall material and extend the overall life of your bucket.
Follow the steps in this article to safely remove and install Cat® side cutters. Or check out the video on how to do this before you dive in:
First, inspect the cutters for signs they need to be replaced. You’re checking that the cutters still provide clearance for the bucket during trenching. They should also aid in cutting through trenching wall material and in protecting sidebars. If the cutters are not performing as needed, it’s time to replace them.
Remove the Cutters
Begin by removing the mounting bolts and side cutters. Clean off any packed material from the mounting surface of the bucket’s side bar and of the side cutter.
f needed, use a grinder to remove any burrs or protrusions on the bucket surfaces. Place the new cutter onto the bucket.
To protect the bolts from breaking prematurely, make sure there is no gap between the side plate and the cutter’s shear ledge.
Install the New Cutters
Hand-tighten the bolts, using thread compound if needed. Finally, torque the mounting bolts to the specification listed in your installation instructions.
