4 Ways the 3512E DGB™ Changes the Game For Your Operation

LESS FUEL AND GHG EMISSIONS. MORE FLEXIBLITY AND PERFORMANCE.

Don’t settle for lower fuel costs OR lower emissions, greater fuel flexibility OR greater performance? Get all four when you choose the new Cat® 3512E Tier 4 Final engine with Dynamic Gas Blending™. Here’s how this turnkey, factory-installed engine can make a difference for your well service operation:

1. It drops your fuel use and costs dramatically.

With a maximum diesel displacement rate of 85% — the highest in the industry — the 3512E DGB™ engine cuts your diesel fuel consumption significantly. Displacement refers to the amount of gas that displaces diesel fuel. If your 3512E DGB burns 100 gallons of diesel per hour when operating in 100% diesel mode, for example, then it could burn as little as 15 gallons per hour in dual-fuel mode.

But that’s not all. The 3512E DGB is the only engine on the market available with automatic start-stop. Engine Idle Reduction System (EIRS) technology stops the engine automatically when it’s not working and when all the systems it’s monitoring (engine, transmission and pump) are in a healthy temperature range. Then, when needed, EIRS automatically restarts the engine — no operator intervention required, no negative impact on the work cycle and no adverse effects on engine or component health. The result: up to 60% less nonproductive idle time and another 3-5% potential reduction in fuel consumption.

2. It broadens the range of fuels you can use.

No other engine can match the fuel flexibility of the 3512E DGB, which can operate on compressed natural gas (CNG), liquified natural gas (LNG), pipeline gas and associated field gas. The engine automatically adjusts to changing ambient and fuel quality conditions — no customer input or gas analysis is required for operation and no recalibration is necessary when equipment is moved or gas supply changes. When gas isn’t available, the 3512E DGB gives you the flexibility to run on 100% diesel.

The 3512E DGB’s fuel tolerance range extends from 850 to 1250 LHV (lower heating value), which means you can burn field gas instead of flaring it. That’s critically important in areas such as the Bakken Shale, where legislation was recently introduced requiring well service operations to eliminate flare gas.

3. Maintains your greenhouse gas footprint.

The 3512E DGB emits the same or fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a comparable 3512E Tier 4 Final diesel — something no other DGB engine can claim. Air-Fuel-Ratio control and port gas injection help minimize or eliminate methane slip. In addition, use of flare gas reduces your overall GHG footprint by decreasing diesel fuel consumption, including the impact of transportation and delivery. It also greatly limits system methane losses from normal gas transportation, processing and handling.

4. It delivers the power, performance, reliability and ease of use you want.

The configuration of the 3512E DGB is identical to that of the 3512E diesel engine, which means no change to power ratings (2250 and 2500 rated horsepower), transient performance or overall reliability. You can count on the same robust diesel engine performance to which you’ve grown accustomed.

Mounting dimensions for trailer design remain the same as well, making the 3512E DGB a drop-in replacement for the diesel model — simplifying package design and reducing downtime. Maintenance intervals and common maintenance items such as oil, air and fuel filters are also the same, meaning there’s no need to stock separate part numbers or allow additional downtime for service. In fact, running the 3512E DGB engine may extend maintenance intervals since gas burns cleaner than diesel.
