Frequently Asked Questions

What typically causes pin failure?

Lack of lubrication is the number-one cause of pin failures. It can result in pin galling, where a friction weld develops between surfaces. That can cause the pin to seize up so the joint no longer moves.

How do I inspect pins and bearings?

Check pins and joints during your daily walkaround. Look for damage to bolts, washers, plates and zerks. Check around joints and pins for leaks, rust or grease buildup. If you notice any parts are missing, replace them immediately. If your machine is equipped with autolube, make sure those lines are not damaged.

When operating your machine, listen for unusual sounds. Squeaky joints may not be properly greased, so you’ll want to find and correct the problem.

NOTE: Always consult your machine's Operation & Maintenance Manual for specific instructions.

How do I grease pins and bearings?

Grease regularly to help parts move smoothly and to purge contaminants from the joint. To start, place your equipment on the ground so you can work safely. Grab your grease gun and a shop towel for cleaning off the zerks. Then you can pump in grease until it begins to emerge from the pin joint. You can find greasing locations and intervals in your machine's Operation & Maintenance Manual.

Why should I choose Cat pins and bearings at replacement time?

Cat pins and bearings are designed with your machine to strict Caterpillar specifications. That means every joint is a precision fit, which helps deliver enhanced productivity and long life as well as keep operating costs low.

Cat linkage pins are manufactured with increased heat treat depth for strength in high-load conditions. This high surface hardness leads to improved resistance to abrasive wear. The surface of Cat linkage pins also makes them highly resistant to abrasive wear. Ultra-fine surface finishes give smoother performance and lower wear rates.
